The best things come in threes…

Rule of Three is a classical ensemble formed of NYC-based musicians and Yale University alumni Chelsea Lane (harp), Ginevra Petrucci (flute), and Colin Brookes (viola). The trio takes its name from the timeless artistic principle that elements grouped in threes create harmony, balance, and a sense of completeness. With harp, viola, and flute—three contrasting voices blending into one—the ensemble embodies this rule in sound, weaving textures that are at once delicate, dynamic, and richly unified.

Committed to imaginative, story-driven programming, Rule of Three performs both core repertoire and contemporary works, with a particular passion for commissioning, premiering, and uplifting new music for this unique instrumental combination. The ensemble is especially dedicated to programming and advocating for works by women composers, as well as collaborating closely with living composers to expand and diversify the repertoire for harp, viola, and flute.

In its inaugural season, Rule of Three performed on The Graduate Center, CUNY’s “Music in Midtown” Series; completed a three-performance residency with Metropolis Ensemble at 1 Rivington St.; and appeared as a featured ensemble on the Pano Hora concert series. Prior to the trio’s current formation, founding members Chelsea Lane and Ginevra Petrucci also performed together on the Vassar College Faculty Recital Series and the Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò at New York University Music Series, experiences that helped shape the ensemble’s collaborative and artistic foundation. Over the past year, the trio has commissioned more than eight new works and presented six world premieres and two New York premieres, establishing itself as an active and emerging voice in contemporary chamber music.
